I have an X2 56K OR an KFlex 56K modem. The manufacturer of my modem has released a bios upgrade for V.90. Should I upgrade?

Yes.  Outlook Technologies supports V.90. V90 is the new standard and may give you better performance. P
lease note that on some modems the bios only has enough space for one standard (i.e., if you upgrade to V.90, the modem will not be able to support X2).

What about V.92?
Yes.  Our locations do support v.92

Modem FAQs

My 56K modem will not connect faster than 33.6k or 28.8k. What can I do?
There are many issues that can prevent a V.90 or K56Flex connection. As modem speeds get faster, connections can become unstable. The modem is designed to test for line conditions, and then select the best speed to create a stable connection. Sometimes this results in a slower connection. To get a V.90 or K56flex protocol connection, your phone line must be of excellent quality.

My modem speaker is too loud. How can I mute it?
Here are some instructions to mute the modem in Windows 95 or NT. Go to Control Panel / Modems. Highlight the modem and click on Properties / Connection. Click on the "Advanced" button. Under the 'Extra Settings', add the following: M

My modem says that it is connected at 115K, but it is only a 56K modem. How can this be?

CONNECTION RATE
The connection rate is the rate at which your modem and the remote modem connect, such as 28,800, 33,600, 40,000, 48,000 and 50,000 bps. This rate is determined by the modems when they connect. Your modems connection rate will never be higher than your modems rated speed. Other terms using the same definition include: Carrier Speed, Line Speed, DCE Speed.

COMPUTER RATE
The computer rate is the rate at which your modem and computer communicate. You change this rate in your software. With your modem, this rate should be higher than your connection rate, such as 57,600, 115,200 or 230,400. The connection rate is much more important than the computer rate. This rate is sometimes reported instead of the CONNECTION RATE. Other terms using the same definition include: Serial port Speed, Modem to Computer Speed, DTE Speed.

I have heard about X2, KFlex and V.90. What is the difference?

When 56K modems were first invented, no standard existed. As a result, US Robotics developed 56K modems using its proprietary X2 protocol and Rockwell International developed 56K modems using its proprietary KFlex protocol. Now a universal standard has finally emerged, V.90. Most 56K modems are flash upgradeable to the new V.90 standard.
